Visual Artist

Hi World!

I'M Carolyn Kramer

As an established contemporary artist, I wish to restore human spirit by extending to viewers a sense of peace, spaciousness and lively energy expressed in my textured, nuanced canvases and gestural drawings.

Born in the countryside of Johnstown, PA, my early life of living close to nature has always influenced my art works. I have lived near the beaches of Vancouver, BC, Canada and now the mountains and lakes of Los Angeles, CA.

Early on, I received a B.Sc.Art Education degree from Kent State University, Ohio. I enjoyed a satisfying teaching career and participated on the founding board of the non-profit, Arts Umbrella Visual and Performing Art School in Vancouver, BC.

Continuously maintaining a professional career, as a visual artist, I attended Otis College of Art & Design; Fine Art Post Grad. Many successful series and art shows followed.  I have participated in numerous curated and juried art exhibits, including those held in Los Angeles and Vancouver.  My art works can be found in private and corporate collections in US and Canada.

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed varied styles and techniques.  Color on color, whimsical washes and multi-layered paintings are created using various mediums of oil encaustics and acrylic paints, chalk pastels, mono-prints, and rubbings.

Love of color is expressed throughout my work; from chunks of vibrant acrylic paints to ethereal tones of inter-woven chalk pastels and delicate, dribbles of gold leaf.  I love the soulful expression of luxurious visual images emerging on canvas and paper.

I am proud to be the recipient of recent awards including the Westlake Village Artist’s Guild, Juried Group Show, 2nd Prize, Mixed Media, Westlake, CA, USA, 2019 and the  American Heritage Committee, NSDAR, Women in the Arts Recognition Award, 2019 .

Inspiration

Female gender, inspired three collections of "Feminine Visions."  Contemporary themes as well as explorations of ancient myth, inform this series.  It is my aspiration to create interesting, relevant work that honors today’s modern women.

"Nature Close-Up" is inspired by my love of earth's elements. Raised in the country, I have closely observed earth’s formations which has become a thematic influence in my work. Inspired by old growth forests, desert landscapes and west coast beaches, my desire is to share a visually healing meditation on environmental beauty. Microscopic images of nature are expanded 1000%, using mediums of chalk pastels, oil, acrylic paint, string and gold leaf.

Techniques

I have enjoyed being an artist, art teacher, and muralist for many years, providing me opportunities to master many art techniques. Oil encaustic, acrylic paints, chalk pastels, watercolor, mono-print, gold leaf are all my “favorite" mediums, which I combine to create visually rich textured surfaces.

Usually, I conceive my art with a two part technique. First, I layout my art series concepts in a blank book filled with a “mess” of sketches, personal photos, paint samples, notes & historical research. All items are glued onto pages until the book is quite full. Second, I turn on my studio music, quiet my soul; then using pastels, brushes, my fingers or even string, layer my mediums onto canvas or paper.  At this point, I don’t think about the book, but permit myself to be in the moment and let my visual voice guide me. This feels natural to me and I experience pure, playful, creative moments of soulful joy

career highlights

I have had the honor of participating in many live and virtual art exhibits over the years in Vancouver, BC, CA and Los Angeles, California My artworks are in  both personal and coporate collections in US and Canada.

Early in my 2o year career as an art educator, I found a passion as a founding board member of a nonprofit children’s art school, Art’s Umbrella. I continued to teach teen art and was head of the painting department for 15 years. Currently in 2021 the non-profit school educates  24,000 children yearly and is moving into a new 22$ million dollar facility in Vancouver.

Professionally exhibiting my art works  and winning awards is always satisfying, however its  particularly rewarding when someone so loves a creation; that they take the art work home to keep enjoying. That’s when I know I have inspired with my art works and it fills my heart with happiness!
